Marquise Madness: The Diamond Shape Surge

It's the year 2025. Enter Selena Gomez and her beautiful new marquise diamond engagement ring given by fiance Benny Blanco... and the surge in popularity in this once "outdated" diamond shape begins.

Selena's Marquise Diamond Engagement Ring

Like she sings about in her "Good for You" hit song, she really is "the marquise diamond" and solely responsible for the uptick in demand for this diamond shape. Gomez's engagement ring is said to feature a large 6-8 carat estimated marquise shape diamond on a relatively simple yellow gold pave band. According to Vogue, after her engagement in December 2024, searches for "marquise engagement rings" were at an all-time high, surpassing round brilliant cut diamond searches for the first time ever.

Who wouldn't take a gorgeous 6-8 carat diamond ring?! But let's take this story back to basics and discover all there is to know about this sought-after diamond shape and the various setting styles that complement it oh-so-well.

What is a Marquise Diamond?

Marquise diamonds have an elongated, oval shape with pointed ends. Its distinctive silhouette is popular for its flattering shape and ability to elongate the wearer's fingers. Because of their shape, they often appear larger than other diamond shapes of the same respective carat weight. They're often also more affordable than round brilliant cut diamonds of the same carat weight.

History of the Marquise Cut Diamond

Queue the romance! Some historians believe that the marquise cut diamond was commissioned by King Louis XV to resemble the lips of his mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour. Legend has it, King Louis XV thought Madame de Pompadour's lips to be the most perfect he had ever seen. A devoted patron of the arts, sciences and literature, supporting artists like Voltaire, the Marquise de Pompadour was a rather impressive woman of the times. It's not surprising that the diamond cut was then named the "Marquise" as a tribute to her royal moniker. The marquise cut is also less commonly referred to as "navette" which means "little ship" in French, calling out its boat-like shape.
