The Portugieser is one of IWC's oldest and best-known watches. Born in the 1930s, IWC created the first wristwatch at the request of two Portuguese merchants who desired a wristwatch with the precision of marine chronometers. The iconic, simplistic design of this collection incorporates Arabic numerals, slim feuille hands and a railway-style chapter ring. These watches contain large movements from pocket watches paying homage to their creation and establishing the trend of large watches that's still popular today. 

Within the IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser family is the Portugieser Chronograph, Portugieser Automatic 40, Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph, Portugieser Annual Calendar, Portugieser Perpetual Calendar and Portugieser Tourbillon models. The entire collection is available in stainless steel and 18k 5N Gold cases. Most IWC models are sold on leather straps, but bracelet strap models have recently become available.
