Watch Buying FAQ

Timepieces are often more valuable than one would expect, even if they are decades old or in need of repair. The detailed movements, quality of the materials, and the designer name all inform an appraiser of its resale value. Therefore, whether you are a collector who is selling watches you no longer wear, an estate seller managing an estate, or someone liquidating some assets for an unexpected life event, selling your unused watches is a quick and lucrative way to find some cash.

When you're ready to sell your watch, here are some questions we've been asked. For further questions, please reach out to our team at 317.844.9003. We would love to talk through the process in more detail.

What is the value of the watch i want to sell?

The value of your timepiece is dependent on several factors such as the:

1) Brand & Model - It should come as no surprise that some luxury brands are more in-demand than others. Same applies to certain models within a brand. If you look above at the list of brands we commonly purchase, there are still some brands that are more sought-after than others, and therefore garner more value.

2) Reference Number and Year of Production

3) Condition - Does it look as old as it may be? Does it have a lot of scratches? Is it running? Sometimes vintage watches are more valuable if they haven't been polished!

4) Box and Papers - This refers to the original packaging and papers that came in the box to certify that it is fact, an authorized watch by the brand. Watches that come with box and papers tend to be more highly sought after. If you're new to watch collecting, you should ALWAYS keep the box and papers of your luxury timepiece(s).

5) Market Demand - Some watches that are limited production or experiencing an uptick in the market can sell for over their retail value. We see a lot of this scenario in Rolex purchases.

6) Service History - Has the watch been recently serviced? This could make it more valuable. If the watch needs a service or overhaul of the movement, the cost of that service will be deducted from the purchase price you're given.

Who should i sell my watch to? a jeweler, an online retailer?

When it comes to selling your timepiece, you have many options. You can go through a jeweler, online marketplace, auction houses or do a private sale. We, of course, would always recommend ourselves when you're looking to sell your watch. Even if you don't go through Moyer, it could benefit you to go through a jeweler that is authorized retailer of luxury watch brands. This is also usually the safest, most secure route you can take.

While there are a number of online marketplaces that specialize in selling and buying pre-owned watches, some of them are "grey-market" dealers with no ties to brand authorization.

Moyer is a trusted, local, family-owned business that has been in the industry for over 45 years. We have the extensive watch knowlege needed to buy and sell luxury swiss timepieces. Before you sell anywhere else, you should always consult Moyer first.

Can i trade in my watch for a new or pre-owned watch?

Yes, Moyer always welcomes watch trades! In fact, we can often give you more of a trade credit than we would offer in cash value.
