Moyer Unveils Partnership with Bayco, One of World's Most Iconic Gemstone Houses

Moyer Fine Jewelers is proud to announce a new designer brand edition to their already impressive fine jewelry repertoire. World renowned gemstone jeweler, Bayco, is officially showcasing their opulent creations in Carmel, Indiana.

The House of Bayco describes their business model as "Jewelry for Kings and Queens", saying it's a metaphorical conception of Bayco's audience. The modern ideal of royalty has grown to include everyone who understands and appreciates the intricate labor and savoir-faire of luxury, two details that go into every Bayco piece.

History of Bayco

Bayco sent their 3rd generation family member, Manuel, to introduce the brand, present the brand's rich history and unveil some of the world's most exquisite gemstones in the world to our team. Bayco began in the 1950s when Manuel's grandfather, Amir Hadjibay traveled from Iran to India on an entrepreneurial mission to sell Persian rugs in exchange for precious gemstones, and then take them back to Iran to sell them. Before long, he was visiting with India's regal maharajas, leaving with showstopping diamonds, carved emeralds, and fiery rubies, among other gems.

In 1957, Amir moved to Milan, Italy, a city that was rich in luxury and had a postwar taste for gems. Around 25 years later, Amir's sons Moris and Giacomo teamed up in New York as co-CEOs of Bayco. Their rich jewel-centric family history, collective years of experience, and exceptional collection of rare gemstones helped solidify their success in the United States and beyond. Since then, the Hadjibay brothers have created only one-of-a-kind pieces, devoting their resources to the exquisite stones they wanted to showcase.

Today, Bayco focuses on the pursuit of coveting the world's finest treasures and nurturing the uniqueness of each stone within their designs. The Bayco name has also grown into its 3rd generation of Hadjibay's with the brother's children Marco, Manuel, Nicole, David and Sophie joining the company, and bringing with them a youthful enthusiasm and commitment to the future.

Bayco's Precious Gemstones

Bayco specializes in the creation of rare precious gemstone jewelry utilizing only the best sapphires, emeralds and rubies in their creations. This expertise has led to our company partnership in producing luxurious watches adorned with iconic gemstones.

Sapphires

Approximately 98% of the world's sapphires are heat-treated or heat-enhanced. Sometimes when sapphires are mined, they have a natural cloud or "silk" within them. Heat-treating breaks up the "silk", letting light through and improving the brilliance and luster of the gemstone. This heat-treating process can take anywhere from 3-6 months in a specialized oven.

There are premiums on sapphires (and many other precious gemstones) based on their origin, or where they were mined). Cashmere sapphires from the Himalayan mountains are a great example of this. When it comes to sapphires utilized in Bayco's collection, there is a particular desire for "Royal Blue" color which has an "inky" tonality and strong brilliance and "Cornflower Blue" which has an impressive glow and color saturation.  Sapphires, however, come in a variety of different colors except red.

Emeralds

Approximately 99% of the world's emeralds go through a process called "oiling". They're lubricated before they go onto the cutting wheel so that the soft stone isn't damaged by the wheel. Almost all precious gemstones- emeralds included- are highly included so gemstones with minimal to no inclusions are extremely rare. Less inclusions equals a higher value as the fewer the inclusions a stone has, the higher the brilliancy will be. The higher the brilliancy, the more light can travel through the gemstone undisturbed creating high luster. Some of the world's most sought-after emeralds originate from the Muzo mine in Columbia.

Rubies

Rubies are the red version of sapphires as they have the same makeup. Ruby crystals are much smaller than emerald and sapphire crystals. A 5 carat ruby is extremely rare because of how small the crystals are when they are mined.

There are three main color compositions of rubies that Bayco works with: Pigeon's Blood, Siam and Emperial Red. All of these originate in different parts of the world and have differences in tonality and color composition. Pigeon's Blood rubies, originating from Burma and Mozambique, have a vivid red color and can have a slight pink or purple tone to them. They emit a strong glow. Siam rubies from Thailand are extremely brilliant and usually a purple-ish red hue. Emperial Red rubies are bright red (almost like a light bulb) and emit that singular color. When comparing apples to apples, Burmese rubies are about 3x more valuable than Mozambique rubies. Unheated rubies are about 5x more valuable than those that have been heat-treated. That being said, the beauty of the gemstone is still the most influential on price.

About the Gemstones

Shape & Cutting Style

Proportions and symmetry are the most important aspects regarding the shape of a gemstone. The cut of the stone is the only characteristic of a gemstone that is controlled by man. While it's true that cutting a gemstone loses carat weight, the improvement could significantly augment its value. The overall goal with cutting is to maximize the stone's beauty by accentuating its strengths.

Color

Precious gemstones can come in many shades or tones of the same color. Finding the perfect tone of color in a gemstone is a master skill as some may be too pale or too dark in nature.

Size

Size is an important factor in determining a precious gemstone's value. In most circumstances, the larger the stone- or the higher the carat weight- the more valuable it is. A larger crystal is rarer to be formed in nature.
